Learn What Your Followers Want with Twitter Analytics
The 10-Minute Touch Up is a quick, weekly challenge to get you DOING, not just reading about doing. Consider it a way to touch up your blogging just 10 minutes at a time!
Challenge: Dig into Twitter analytics to find out what your followers want.
Why: To see what gets your followers interacting with you, you can look to your analytics for insights into what people are engaging with already. It doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself on Twitter or that every tweet has to be calculated and analyzed. It’s more about seeing which tweets are the most interesting or effective… and then doing more of that.

How to Do It
First you have to set up Analytics, unless you already have it. All the steps make it look worse than it really is. Promise. Set up should take about 3-4 minutes then you can spend the rest of your 10 minutes analyzing and making notes on what to continue, improve, or change.
1. Visit http://analytics.twitter.com while you are logged in.
According to TechCrunch, “the dashboard should now be open to every account that has been open for at least 14 days, isn’t restricted/protected/suspended, and (curiously) that primarily tweets in English, French, Japanese, or Spanish.” If you don’t see it, that’s probably why.
If you do see it, don’t go off and let this be overwhelming! Remember this is a 10-minute challenge! Just concentrate on a few things. Here are a few things to look at:
2. Look for any peaks in your impressions, the scroll down to see individual tweets for that day. Anything stand out with a higher engagement rate than your other posts? For that first spike below, it was one tweet that honestly didn’t perform super well in terms of engagement, but was a RT of Social Media Examiner tweeting the article I wrote for them. However, someone retweeting it might have been someone with a huge audience, giving me more impressions.

3. Look at which tweets are getting higher engagement. I’ll be the first to admit my Twitter feed has been rather boring lately. Trying to finish up a new course will do that to you! Nevertheless, here are some of my recent tweets.
10-Minute Touch Up: Find out what you followers want using Twitter AnalyticsI blurred out my first two numbers (Impressions and Engagements) not because I’m shy, but because I don’t want you to compare numbers because we probably have a different amount of followers. 200 impressions out of 1,000 followers is better than 200 out of 7,000. Twitter ads perform at about 1-3% (though I KNOW it can go higher for some people), so don’t fret if your engagement rate is under 5% because it’s normal.
As you go through this, find:
- 1 tweet that performs well (and make a note to do more of that). For example, a tweet that says “NEW POST: Blog Post Title- LINK” may perform better or worse than a tweet that says “Struggling to ___? I dish out my tips that worked for me. LINK”
- 1 tweet that had no engagement (but one that you care about improving). Is there anything you could do better next time? For example, maybe you asked a question but it was too complicated. Or maybe you suggested they follow you on Pinterest, but you made it boring.
4. Head to the Followers tab.
Here you can get an idea as to your follower growth, gender, location, interests. For this challenge, just look at your followers’ interests:

For interests, make a note of:
- 1 of your top 3 topics (under either list). For me, it’s Moms. I definitely want to continue sharing content and tweeting about parenting because my audience is already interested in it.
- 1 topic you wish you had higher up on your Top Interests. For me, it’s Marketing. That means I should find more fellow marketers to follow and I should tweet about more marketing content.
